"We got used to standing in line at seven o'clock in the morning, twelve noon, and again at seven o'clock in the evening. We stood in a long queue with a plate in our hand, into which they ladled a little warmed up water with a salty or coffee flavor. Or else they gave us a few potatoes. We got used to sleeping without a bed, to saluting every uniform, not to walk on sidewalks and then again to walk on the sidewalks. We got used to undeserved slaps, blows, and executions. We got accustomed to seeing people die in their own excrement, to seeing piled-up coffins full of corpses, to seeing the sick amid dirt and filth and to seeing the helpless doctors. We got used to it that from time to time, one thousand unhappy souls would come ere and that, from time to time, another thousand unhappy souls would go away...."

The journal entry seems to sum up the everyday lives of the people in concentration camps. It's kind of sad how the tone of the writing seems to be neutral, like this is what they expect to happen everyday, and it did. Your pictures go along with the line, "We got used to undeserved slaps, blows, and executions." The picture on the left shows what happened to many people. I really like the creative way you used yarn string to make it look like prison bars. These people were indeed prisoners. It's really interesting how you put those "bars" over the pictures, because those events happened behind the bars. I guess that could also show that behind that, these horrors happened, and not a lot of people knew because of the bars. Great job with your butterfly.
ReplyDeleteCompared with the other poems, I can see how the journal entry might have been a challenge to transfer and interpret into a butterfly. I think you did a beautiful job of balancing visual simplicity and heavy subject matter. Also, your tags have both your personal feelings towards the journal and objective aspects of it like mood and tone. Interestingly, you added the bars over the pictures which created even more symbolism. Your technique with layering construction paper was also creative and added psychical and metaphorical depth!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I think that converting a journal entry is very difficult. But there are times that it could be easier because you are allowed to see how they are feeling. You interpreted the entry very well, and you used your tags to support what you were trying to prove. I also liked how you provided pictures to add a type of visual for us. You also explained the colors and techniques you used really well, great job!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I absolutely adored your explanation for the color schemes you used. I have never thought of the color orange as a hopeful color but now that I put more thought into it, it does. The color black is negative toward a lot of things, and red is definitely aggression. My favorite part of your butterfly are the numbers. That is very creative because you included the age of the author within your butterfly. That shows 15 years of life and the author is already put in misery. Spectacular job!
